Things we take for granted

Life off the grid is more simple, more about basic survival. Things folks normally take for granted are put into perspective. All those services that people in civilized areas come to expect are not the norm, road maintenance, trash removal, being able to flip a switch to turn on the light any time, etc.

When the water freezes up, a bath from a pot of warm water feels pretty good. A regular shower is luxurious after the pipes have been pieced back together. Flushing the toilet without using a bucket and using the faucet again to brush your teeth is a privilege.

When the temp has been below zero for a few days, 20 degrees feels like T-shirt weather. Life is good when the wind calms down. The simple life is refreshing compared to the mad rush of town, it is a relief to get away from traffic, noise and people who all seem to be in a hurry.
